Study: ‘Barefoot’ shoes can contribute to injuries

PROVO, Utah – A study led by an assistant professor of exercise science at Brigham Young University found “barefoot” five finger running shoes can contribute to injuries in the bones of the runner’s feet.

According to an article on BYU’s website, Sarah Ridge and her co-authors examined MRI scans on the feet of study paricipant; some who used the minimalist shoes and others who used traditional running shoes.

The MRI scans revealed that the runners who used the minimalist shoes had more inflammation causing excessive fluid in the bone and more stress injuries than those who wore traditional running shoes, the article said.
