Former Olympic speedskater accused of sexual misconduct

Posted

SALT LAKE CITY – A former Olympic speedskater has resigned from his position on several speedskating boards after allegations of sexual misconduct arose.

Andy Gabel, a former member of the U.S. Speedskating board, allegedly had inappropriate relations with Bridie Farrell, one of his teenage teammates, back in the late 1990s. He was in his 30s at the time.

Gabel resigned from leadership roles he held with the International Skating Union and National Speed Skating Hall of Fame.

The woman, Bridie Farrell, says there was no sex involved but says she spoke out to change the culture of the sport.

U.S. Speedskating says they will be conducting an investigation into the allegations, and that they won’t tolerate abuse of any kind.
