SALT LAKE CITY - Microsoft invited Utah high school girls to their yearly DigiGirlz Day this week to encourage more women to major in science and technology.

The company is hoping events like DigiGirlz will increase interest in technology and put more women in a male-dominated field.

"This is to promote science, technology, engineering and math among high school girls. Today we see in the industry that there are a lot of men in the science and technology field but not so much women," said Priya Raghavan, a Microsoft volunteer. "Women bring a diverse prospective to everything in technology. We want them to be producers of technology, not just consumers of it."

During the two-day event, girls will get their hands on the latest technology, interact with Microsoft executives and participate in programming sessions.

"I want to be a web designer and a web developer so just learning the different parts behind it and how things work and interact with each other is really helpful for me," said Stacey Halldorson, Bingham High senior.
