SALT LAKE CITY -- It has been shown that children learn math, science and languages better when the material is combined with the arts, and children came to the Utah State Capitol on Tuesday to advocate for that combination.

The event was put on by Friends of Art Works for Kids, which is a grassroots initiative created to advocate for the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program. The program integrates core curriculum subjects with the arts.

Lisa Cluff, director of Friends of Art Works for Kids , said the combination is effective.

"By using music, dance, theater, visual art—they're integrating the core curriculum into their program,” she said.  “So students are learning the math, science, language arts through their music, dance and visual art."

Last year the program had their funding cut in half. This year Friends of Art Works for Kids asked lawmakers for $4 million, which is the same amount they were allotted last year.
