ST. GEORGE, Utah — The final box has been checked, and Dixie State is now officially a university.

Gov. Gary Herbert signed legislation Saturday to make Dixie State University a reality. The name Dixie has drawn controversy in the past, but last month the Dixie State College Board of Trustees voted to keep Dixie in the name as the school transitioned to become a university rather than a college.

The bill making the change was passed earlier this week, but it wasn’t official until it received the governor’s signature Saturday morning.

To qualify to become a University Dixie State officials spent four years tripling the number of four-year-degree programs, hiring sixty new faculty members, and meeting other benchmarks set by the Utah Board of Regents.
