Men charged in Dump Fire enter plea bargain

Posted

UTAH COUNTY — Two men from out-of-state charged with starting a fire at the dump near Saratoga Springs last year struck a plea bargain on Tuesday.

The two men will each pay $5,000 in restitution for a blaze that cost around $2 million to put out and forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes. More than 450 firefighters from several states were called in to control the fire.

Kenneth Nielsen, 37, of Idaho and Jeffrey Conant, 42, of Washington state agreed to plead no-contest to a charge of using illegal targets. In exchange the court dropped the reckless burning charges.

The two men will not serve jail time.
