SALT LAKE CITY - Undergraduate students from the University of Utah and Utah State University showed off their research projects at the Utah State Capitol on Thursday.

The Research Posters on the Hill event was created thirteen years ago to celebrate undergraduate research in Utah's universities and inspire Utah students. Students lined the Capitol with poster presentations to show off to younger students and lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

"The students are so excited and they get to speak to all sorts of individuals. We have elementary school students here, we have some middle school students here," said Jill Bader, University of Utah. "They're visiting the posters so the students are extremely excited not only to get the word to legislators but to tell those students in middle school and in high school this can be you in a few years."

Organizers and students say the event is an opportunity to show lawmakers the importance of supporting undergraduate research in Utah.

"It's great to interact with congressmen and congresswomen and just be here at the Capitol. So much history is here," said Utah State University student Luz Maria Carreno. "To represent Utah State University, Hispanics and also undergraduate research which is very important."

Topics from a variety of subjects were highlighted, including studies in geography, computing, chemistry and preventive medicine. Students presented their research findings and shared solutions on how to fix the problems they found while researching.
