SOUTH JORDAN, Utah -- Car thefts and burglaries are on the rise in South Jordan.

Police are warning people that where and how you park your car could make it a perfect target for criminals.

As temperatures drops, car thefts go up according to the South Jordan Police Department. This is due to the number of people who leave their cars unattended but idling to warm up.

Police said people are roaming the neighborhoods specifically between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. looking for idling vehicles left unattended.

The area seeing the most crimes is between Redwood Road to Bangerter Highway and south of 9800 South to just north of 11400 South.

"With modern cars, you really don't need to leave your cars warming up, they warm up better when you drive them," said Det. Sam Winkler, South Jordan Police. "So go scrap the ice off your window and drive them, they will warm up a lot faster. You will save gas and a lot of this pollution we are getting into our air right now."

There have also been more reports of property being stolen from vehicles. Police recommend placing valuables out of sight in the trunk.
