MIDWAY, Utah - The nation's best Nordic skiers raced for the finish line in the U.S. Cross Country Championship at Soldier's Hollow in Midway on Sunday.

The U.S. Cross Country Championship is a big-name race, with many of the athletes nationally ranked and pushing to make it to the world games in February.

"It's a great community because everyone is supportive. They know how difficult it is and you are breathing fresh air," said Tom Egan, a parent from Florday.

Racers travel 30 kilometers, or almost 18.5 miles, in the Utah snow. Coach August Teague says it's about more than just the athlete, but the skis and wax, too.

"The wax is all of it today because it's a classic race. Without wax you have no kick, so you can't go anywhere. And if your wax is too sticky, your skis go slow and you don't go anywhere," Teague said.

After an hour and a half on the snow, the athletes are tired and worn out, but the fans are out there cheering them on the whole way.

"It's an amazing feeling to come down the line and think, 'I'm going to do it,'" said Torin Koos.

Koos came in first place with a time of 1:26:04.0, just three seconds ahead of second place finisher Erik Bjornsen.
