MILLCREEK, Utah -- About 400 Utahns participated in the "Commitment Day" race Tuesday morning on Wasatch Boulevard in Millcreek.

The 5K race is part of a nationwide initiative to help Americans get started on their 2013 fitness goals and promote a healthy lifestyle.

People in over 30 cities around the country participated in the run simultaneously.

"We wanted to make a revolution to where they're making a commitment rather than a resolution," said Steve Cutler, a Lifetime Fitness manager. "Most people don't keep their resolutions, but they will keep a commitment."

The nationwide event comes "at a time when our nation is at a breaking point with ever-rising obesity rates, a generation of children facing serious health consequences, escalating health care costs and controllable diseases spiraling out of control," according to a news release from event organizers.
