AMERICAN FORK, Utah — One person is in serious condition after a crash on I-15 southbound near mile post 278 in American Fork on Monday.

It happened at approximately 9 a.m. when a vehicle entering the roadway from Pioneer Crossing lost control and hit a semitrailer, taking out the truck’s steering axle.

The semitrailer slide to the right and struck a vehicle stopped at the roadside, causing that vehicle to almost over roll over a concrete wall.

“It was a combination of the slipperiness of the road and the lost of his right, front tire with the impact with the jeep,” said Cpl. Todd Johnson, Utah Highway Patrol. “Now there was a previous accident and two vehicles were stopped off the side, the semi hit one of those vehicles that was stopped his its driver inside.”

12-10-semi-crash-af-2Crews had to extricate the driver from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The driver was upgraded to serious condition later in the morning, according to Cpl. Johnson.

Cpl. Johnson said the slick roads are “hit and miss” as some areas are worse than others. In Salt Lake County, there were four reported crashes Monday morning, whereas there were 11 reported accidents in Utah County, according to Cpl. Johnson.

“We just need people to slow down, reduce their speed and if they see emergency vehicles, slow down and move away one lane, if they can do so,” Cpl. Johnson said.
