PROVO, Utah -- Allegiant announced nonstop jet service between Provo and Phoenix/Mesa, Ariz. on Wednesday.

The new fights will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays beginning on Feb. 15, 2013.

"Many people will be surprised to actually realize that Mesa is one of the largest cities in the Unites States, bigger than Atlanta, they have almost a half million people. Many of those have a connection to Provo and want to spend time here in Provo, and I suspect many Provo residents will want to send time in Phoenix and Mesa area, especially this time of year," said Provo Mayor John Curtis.

The jets can accommodate 166-passengers and the flight takes about 90 minutes one-way. The company is offering an introductory rate of $49.99 for a one-way ticket.

In September, Frontier Airlines announced the company would discontinue service to Provo Municipal Airport in January 2013.

Allegiant is based in Las Vegas and recent began providing service between Ogden-Hinckley Airport and Phoenix/Mesa, Ariz.
