The Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a measure that would prohibit the demolition of buildings to make room for parking lots in the city’s central business district.

The amendments to the Salt Lake City Code will also prohibit surface parking lots and parking structures on block corners and Main Street.

Parking development will be allowed in midblock areas when constructed behind a building or 75 feet behind the property line.
