SALT LAKE CITY -- When it comes to how much attention Mitt Romney's religion received during his campaign and whether or not the media coverage was fair or accurate, public opinion seems to be split.

Romney has gotten a share of critical views pertaining to his religious beliefs. Tim Chambliss, from the Hinkley Institute of Politics, said it is no surprise Romney's critics would use his LDS faith against him.

"Religion is really a private matter. But the fact is, when you are public figure voluntarily thrusting yourself into public debate, seeking the highest office in the land, then you are fair game for questions by the news media and by the voters," Chambliss said.

Mitt Romney's run for president has put the LDS Church in the spotlight, but for many Utahns asked by FOX 13, it has not been brought up as much as they thought it would.

"I really don't remember hearing much about Mormonism at all -- a little bit in the beginning, but not much since the two candidates were picked, or since Mitt Romney was picked," said one Utah resident.

Chambless pointed out that Romney's religion was much less of an issue in this election than it was four years ago when he was candidate in the Republican primary.
