SALT LAKE CITY – Police in Salt Lake County are asking residents to look around their property for an elderly man who went missing earlier this week.

Unified Police put out a missing and endangered alert on Friday for 80-year-old Fritz Helland, a Millcreek man with mental health issues. The search began at around 5 p.m. in the Canyon Rim area of Millcreek.

Police say Helland took his dog for a walk on Wednesday and never returned.

More than 1,800 volunteers have been combing his neighborhood over the last two days looking for him and the dog, but now they’re changing the nature of their search. Police are asking residents to look around their homes, trailers, sheds and yards for any signs of Helland.

Helland is 5-feet, 11 inches, and 165 pounds, with white hair and blue eyes. He was possibly wearing a brown-tan jacket. He may be with his dog, a miniature doberman pinscher.

Anyone with information on Helland’s location is asked to call Unified Police at 801-743-7000.
