SALT LAKE CITY - Thousands of breast cancer survivors along with their friends and family teamed up with the American Cancer Society at Liberty Park on Saturday morning.

The event, sponsored by FOX 13 and emceed by Hope Woodside, is called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The goal is to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.

Beverly Savini was diagnosed with breast cancer less than two months ago. She was at the walk with family and friends who will be there to support her through what is going to be a tough journey.

"It's been change of life, but we're going to fight it. I have a lot of support, so I'm very grateful," she said. "It makes you want to fight more and live, live for my family and my kids and my husband but I'm grateful for all my brothers, sisters, uncles everywhere. I'm just so grateful to live."

Fox 13 and other community sponsors team up with the American Cancer Society every year to help fund programs and services that support people fighting the disease. Salt Lake City's Making Strides event is one of more than 250 events held across the country each year.

Thousands show up in Utah every year, a sign of how many people breast cancer impacts, but seeing the support is encouraging, especially for people at the event for the first time.

"This is my first year walking - in memory of him - So I thought I might as well go all out," said Mariah Sugg.
