MIDVALE — The Road Home shelter in Midvale opened its winter overflow shelter for homeless families Monday.

The opening came early, considering the overflow shelter usually does not open until cold weather sets in, according to a Road Home shelter spokeswoman. The downtown Salt Lake City shelter is already at capacity.

The spokeswoman says it appears the weak economy is forcing more families to seek help. She says 90-percent of the families using the winter shelter are homeless for the first time.
