CLEARFIELD – WASATCH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A special flag will be presented to Wasatch Elementary 270 Center St, Clearfield on Sept. 11, thanks to the efforts of United Way.

Displayed in a shadowcase, the flag has flown over the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, at Hill Air Force Base and even the U.S. Capitol.

At a special 9-11 tribute assembly, hosted by United Way, Utah Lt. Gov. Greg Bell will present the flag and its authentication certificates to the student body. The event begins with the arrival of the Honor Guard at 9 a.m., and a flag raising ceremony at 9:30 a.m. At about 9:45 a.m., Bell will make the presentation of the special flag. Additionally, Camille Mortensen, a sister of Brady Howell, who died on Sept. 11, 2001, when the Pentagon was hit, will speak about the importance of that day.

The 9-11 Service Assembly began as a grant from the Utah Commission on Volunteers implemented by United

Way of Northern Utah. Its purpose was to put service-related books into the hands of students in memory of Howell. This program has expanded into a special project carried out monthly at elementary schools all over northern Utah.

Jeff Rodseth, a retired Air Force colonel, has worked with Hill Air Force Base to bring the Air Force Honor Guard to the schools for the program.

Following the ceremony, local dignitaries, members of the military, and local fire and police officials will read age-appropriate books to students in their classrooms.

FLAGS AT HALF MAST

In honor of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and as a tribute to the heroes who came to their country’s aid, Governor Gary R. Herbert has ordered all flags on state-owned facilities to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012.

The Governor issued the following statement:

“Utahns will never forget one of our nation’s darkest days, or the tragic loss of nearly 3,000 innocent lives. We will always remember the selfless first responders, military personnel and citizens who aided in rescue, recovery and rebuilding. We will forever honor the men and women in our Armed Forces who defend our homeland in the war on terror. In tribute to both the fallen and the survivors, let us remain dedicated to principles of freedom, and may we serve our fellow citizens and community, strengthening what the terrorists sought—and failed—to destroy: The enduring spirit of the American people.”

Under two separate acts of Congress, Sept. 11 is designated as Patriot Day and as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. In recognition of the Day of Service and Remembrance, the Governor and his staff are holding a canned food drive, starting Sept. 11, then donating to and volunteering at the Utah Food Bank later this month.

The ceremony will include the Patriot Guard, remarks from Reresenstative Bishop’s Office and General Tarbet who have served as honorary co-chairman for this project sponsored by the Davis Youth of Promise, The Davis High School Marching Band, and state and county officials. The community of Magna Township will hold a special memorial service to honor those who lost their lives in the horrific attacks at the World Trade Center Towers, Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Magna Veterans Park, 8400 West 2700 South, Magna, Utah. The Magna VFW Post 7398 Honor Guard will mark the day with the raising of the American Flag at 8:15AM followed by four bell tolls representing lives lost during the four terrorist attacks. At 7:15PM, members of the community along with Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Veterans, members of Unified Police Department, Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and Unified Fire Authority Unit A will gather to light luminaries that will line the Magna Veterans Park. A brief service will be held with music provided by Scott Hongell, a retired US Marine and lead singer of Monrovia.

This years commeration will recognize two WWII Veterans who were lifelong Magna residents and community advocates who passed away earlier this year, Norman Fitzgerald and John Wilson. Mr. Fitzgerald served in many roles throughout the years more recently on the Magna Town Council and Magna Community Action Program. Mr. Wilson worked with Salt Lake County to dedicate a plot of land to create the Magna Veterans Park. He designed and monuments that exist there today.

Additionally, UFA Fire Station 102 will mark the passing of former firefighters and more recently Bruce McGowan, firefighter and paramedic, who lost his life in a car accident on September 11, 2010 in Parley’s Canyon. While Mr. McGowan did not live in the Magna community, he had a deep “caring for and attachment to the people he served here. His presence is missed every day,” said Captain Steven Root, UFA #102, A Unit.

All are welcome to participate in both events.

OREM – UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY
on behalf of Utah Valley University Student Association in regards to inviting you to our September 11th memorial. Joe Torrillo, a surviving firefighter, will be a keynote speaker on September 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Utah Valley University in the Reagan Theater in the Sorensen Center.

A 24 year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, Joe Torrillo was promoted to Lieutenant in 1996 after spending 15 years fighting fires in Manhattan’s financial district. While convalescing from a serious injury incurred during a rescue effort at a fire on New Year’s Eve 1996, Joe Torrillo worked in the office of fire safety education. During that period, Joe Torrillo gained the skills of a public speaker that would find him preaching the message of fire prevention and survival around the world.

Knowing that his Brother firefighters from Engine 10 and Ladder 10 across the street from the towers would be the first responders on the scene, Lt. Torrillo diverted to the World Trade Center complex two minutes before the second plane struck the south tower. While evacuating ambulance crews from the south tower, Lt. Torrillo was buried under the debris of the first collapse.

After being dug out by rescue personnel, Lt. Torrillo was placed on a boat on the Hudson River and taken to a New Jersey hospital where he woke up in the operating room. By night fall, Lt. Torrillo was placed on the official missing list, and assumed to have been missing in action. Luckily, he was identified some time later by hospital personnel, who then notified his frantic family. On February 21st, 2004, Lt. Joe Torrillo was officially retired from the New York City Fire Department from those injuries.

Lt. Joe Torrillo promises to spend the rest of his days not only as an expert fire safety educator, but hopes to utilize his speaking skills and persona to convey the message of peace, tolerance, dedication commitment, and perseverance to the youth of America who he cares so much about. Lt. Torrillo’s message is widely received as he parallels his own struggles as an adolescent and his career in the busiest rescue service on the face of the earth. At the end of his presentation, Lt. Torrillo welcomes his audience to present their own feelings, and engages the participants with a question and answer period.

PROVO – BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
ROTC cadets at Brigham Young University will hold a vigil and rifle salute Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the flagpole and courtyard east of the Abraham Smoot Building to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The vigil will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the American flag raised to half-staff. BYU cadets representing the Air Force and Army ROTC will stand at attention throughout the 24-hour period in 20-minute change-of-guard rotations.

A table featuring a folded flag and a wreath will be placed in front of the flagpole, and those who would like to participate may place flowers at the table.

Beginning at 8:50 a.m., a three-volley rifle salute will be fired. This will be a unique opportunity for observers to witness the three-volley salute ceremony, which will feature specially trained cadets firing blank rounds using modified M-1 Garand rifles designed to fire only blank cartridges. The rifles were loaned to the ROTC by a local chapter of the American Legion.

At 9 a.m., four members of the BYU community will place roses at the site representing the four airplanes and their passengers that were lost that day.

The following day, Sept. 12, at 7:30 a.m., the folded flag will be secured, the flag raised to full staff, and the memorial will be complete.

Members of the campus and local community are welcome to come to the site throughout the day to pay respect and honor the memories of those who lost their lives.
