SALT LAKE CITY - A program from Rocky Mountain Power can help Utah residents pay less for utilities every month.

The wattsmart New Home program gives builders and homeowners cash incentives for purchasing high-efficiency appliances and equipment for their homes.

"We pay incentives to builders to build more energy efficient homes. This is a benefit to the builders because they are able to offer more energy efficient homes to their home buyers for a lower cost. It's a benefit to the home buyer because they are able to purchase a more energy efficient, better built home," said Troy Preslar with the wattsmart New Homes program.

Saving energy isn't as simple as buying a more efficient heating and cooling system. Homes have to work with that system to help reduce energy use. The New Homes program takes into account every inch and corner of the home to make sure energy efficient appliances are used to their best potential.

"If you have windows or doors or insulation that isn't tight, then that will make a big difference because you're just blowing air out the windows, you're blowing air out the doors, or through the other seams in the house," said Tyler Kukahiko with Mountain Vista Homes.
