WEST JORDAN - A new overpass in West Jordan is easing traffic congestion and pioneering a change to Bangerter Highway.
The intersection of 7800 South and Bangerter Highway in West Jordan has been congested for years with a major retail center and residential areas nearby.
"The future growth projections that are expected out here on the west side of the valley are calling for interchanges along Bangerter Highway from 7800 South all the way down to I-15, said Adan Carrillo, UDOT Public Information Officer.
UDOT has selected the intersection for a new highway entrance and exit pattern. The single-point urban interchange is similar to off-ramps on I-15; no stopping is required at a traffic light at 7800 South.
"As you go northbound or southbound on Bangerter Highway, you will not have to stop at 7800 South. You can just go right along. However if you do need to get off at 7800 South you'll just stay in the right hand lane take your exit," said Carrillo.
Two lanes in both directions opened on Sunday. UDOT is still doing some minor work on the bridge's underpass; the work will be completed by the end of July and three lanes will be open.
Carrillo says the interchange is the first of many planned for intersections along Bangerter Highway.
