A new program out of Salt Lake County aims to teach residents how to save money on utility bills and make life a little greener.

Parents and community members gathered at Beehive Elementary School earlier this week to learn how to save energy.

"Our goal is to help turn homes into a very safe and healthy place to live," said Randy Jefferson, Salt Lake County Housing Manager. "You could potentially save up to $100,000 a year by making $5,000 to $10,000 improvements to your home."

Jefferson says even small adjustments will help homeowners save money. He says insulating an attic can cut energy costs by almost 20 percent.

Leaving iPod or cell phone chargers plugged in when they're not in use wastes energy. Residents are encouraged to turn their lights and computers off when they're not in use.

Encourage kids to decide what snacks they want from the fridge before opening it rather than leave the door open while deciding what to eat.
