A 13-year-old girl is dead after an accident on Interstate 215 Wednesday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol says that Chelsea Pearson from Taylorsville died after the car her brother was driving crashed on the interstate shortly after 3 p.m.

UHP says that the vehicle was traveling northbound on I-215 West near 1300 South just after 3:10 p.m. when it veered off the road and crossed into the right-hand shoulder. Troopers say the car then struck a power box, and then a camera post with the passenger side of the car. The collision caused the car to come back towards the roadway and into a large road sign. From there, the car traveled up onto the k-rail where is eventually came to rest facing east.

"All of sudden it [the car] fish-tailed and jerked right and went off to the side of the road, hit approximately two metal poles flipped and rolled and actually hit one of the structures, one of the big overhead sign poles, then got perched up on the concrete barrier," said UHP Sgt. Jeff Nigbur.

The driver of the vehicle, Chelsea's brother, 17-year-old Joshua D. Pearson, received only minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

Troopers say speed or impairment are not a factor in the investigation.

The right two lanes of the roadway were closed for a few hours while crews investigated.
