Freshmen lead Utah gymnasts to 197.40 – 191.925 victory over Utah State

The University of Utah Red Rocks gymnasts, led by high-scoring freshmen and successul all-around scores, topped the 197 mark for the first time since the 2009 season in a rout of of the Utah State University Aggies.

Freshman Georgia Dabritz won two events in front of 13,126 fans at the Huntsman Center on Friday night. Her 9.975 on floor and 9.95 on bars highlighted an excellent showing by the Utes. Fellow freshman Kailah Delany topped the marks on vault with a 9.925. Kassandra Lopez premiered for the Utes with 9.825s on both bars and beam.

Three Utah gymnasts competed in the all-around. Red-shirt senior Kyndal Robarts was on her way to securing the all-around victory before falling on her first tumbling pass on the floor, scoring a 9.10 on the event and finishing with a 38.725 in her first home meet since suffering a knee injury in the third meet of last season.

Senior Stephanie McAllister won the all-around with a 39.450, highlighted by a 9.90 on the floor. Sophomore Corrie Lothrop rounded out the all-around competitors for the Utes with a 39.30, scoring a 9.90 on the bars and 9.80s on her other three events.

The Utes, who struggled with the bars last week, scoring only a 48.45, came back this week, scoring a 49.375, their second highest rotation of the night. The Utes again topped the marks with their 49.40 on vault, and scored a 49.350 on floor and 49.275 on beam. They had to count nothing lower than a 9.8 all night and finished with a 197.400.

The Aggies, who are dealing with multiple injuries, struggled throughout the night with falls on every event. Sarah Landes topped the marks for the Aggies in three events with a 9.675 on vault, 9.825 on bars and 9.70 on beam. Landes came in third on the floor for USU with a 9.625; Amelia Montoya’s 9.725 won floor for the Aggies. Landes topped the all-around for the Aggies with a 38.825 and Montoya, who fell on beam, finished with an even 38.0 in the all-around.

The Utes have a week off before hosting BYU at the Huntsman Center on Jan. 27. Utah State heads to Denton, Texas, next week in a quad meet with Texas Women’s University, Oklahoma and Centenary College.
