LOGAN, Utah -- As many as 50 cars caught fire after a blaze broke out at a salvage yard in Logan Saturday, and State Road 30 was closed near 2000 West for several hours.

State Route 30 has reopened as of about 6 p.m., officials said. The road was closed earlier due to smoke and to allow easier access for emergency vehicles.

Capt. Tyson Budge with Logan Police says there is a large fire at DD Auto and Salvage Yard, located at 2000 West and 200 North (State Road 30.) The fire began around 2:50 p.m. and the cause is undetermined.

Budge said there is a lot of fuel and other flammable products in the yard, and news crews at the scene have heard several explosions.

Assistant Chief Craig Humphreys of Logan Fire said 40 to 50 vehicles in the salvage yard have caught fire, and crews from Logan, North Logan, Smithfield, Mendon, Hyrum and Wellsville have all responded.

There is only one fire hydrant near the scene, so additional water trucks have responded to provide water for engines fighting the blaze.

Humphreys said as of just before 5 p.m. that firefighters have gained the upper hand on the blaze.

Fox 13 News has a crew on the way to the scene, and we'll update this story as more details emerge.
