SALT LAKE CITY -- A woman died on Friday when she stumbled into the path of a TRAX train in Salt Lake City.

Friday night authorities identified the deceased as 57-year-old Marie Gay Cardwell.

Carl Arky, a UTA spokesman, said Cardwell was hit by the front of the TRAX train as it approached the station at 400 South and 900 East.

Arky said Cardwell was waiting for the eastbound Red Line train. As it pulled into the station at 15 miles an hour, she stepped out from behind a shelter partition and toward the train.

"Apparently she just stumbled, and leaned out over the track and made contact with the train," he explained. "The force of the blow forced her back onto the platform, but it was a powerful blow."

He said she died on scene.

Arky said Cardwell had been suffering seizures lately and "had been known to fall." Cardwell lived with her husband in an assisted living center.
