A cold front that stalled over northwest Utah is expected to make its way back over the state, bringing snow across Utah Saturday evening and overnight.
“The main event is coming, the main storm system is coming tonight," UDOT spokesman John Gleason said Saturday evening.
Winter weather watches and warnings have been issued for large portions of Utah.
As of Saturday around 3 p.m., forecasters expect snow to become widespread over northern Utah late Saturday evening before moving to central and southern Utah and southwest Wyoming.
Precipitation in valley areas should taper off Sunday afternoon, while snow should continue in northern Utah mountains Sunday evening.
Winter conditions are expected on roadways including I-15, I-70 and I-80 Sunday, but things are expected to clear out by Monday.
“By the Monday morning commute, our plows will have a chance to catch up," Gleason said. "We can’t see any major impacts for the Monday morning commute just yet."
Snow totals through Sunday are estimated at 8-15 inches for mountainous areas, while valleys could see 2 to 4 inches.
Benches may see 4 to 8 inches of snow.
Similar snow totals are expected in portions of the area affected by the Winter Storm Watch.
Forecasters say the slow movement of the cold front makes it hard to predict exactly where and when snow will fall; localized areas could see snowfall amounts greater than the average estimates.
