WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- One person was killed and two others were injured after troopers say a pickup truck went off an I-215 overpass and T-boned an SUV traveling below on 3500 South Sunday.

Sgt. Nathan Croft with the Utah Highway Patrol said the pickup truck was traveling northbound on I-215 prior to the deadly crash, which Fox 13 News first heard report of around 4:30 p.m.

"He went off the side of the road, launched himself onto 3500 South proper and T-boned another vehicle with two people in it," Croft said.

Police at the scene say the male driver of the pickup truck suffered fatal injuries and was the sole occupant in the vehicle.

Two people in the SUV suffered serious injuries, but police say those injuries are not considered life-threatening.

"They are in the hospital," Croft said of the two patients. "They are talking and alert. We have hopes that they are going to be well. They obviously have some injures. I don’t know the extent of those right now, but it looks like they are not going to expire."

The identities of those involved have not yet been released, but police say all of the patients are adults believed to be in their 40s.

Police say it's unclear what caused the vehicle to launch off the overpass, and the investigation is ongoing.

"Don’t know what the intention was," Croft said of the driver of the pickup truck. "Whether they were trying to take the off-ramp and missed it or whether they were impaired: we are investigating that.”

UDOT says 3500 South is closed in both directions at 2400 West as crews respond. As of about 6 p.m. authorities expected the lane closures to continue for another two hours or so. Authorities say the deceased man remains stuck within the truck and crews are still working to recover the body.
