MILLARD COUNTY, Utah — A SWAT standoff near Delta ended peacefully Saturday when the suspect surrendered to deputies.

Police were called to a home in a rural area north-west of Delta around 9 a.m. Saturday after a woman reported a male acquaintance became intoxicated and physically assaulted her.

Police say the home is in an area known to the locals as Abraham.

The woman said the man pointed firearms at her and made threats. She made it safely out of the home and made contact with responding deputies.

“She told them at that time that the male had additionally threatened law enforcement that should they respond that he would assault them with the weapons,” said Capt. Richard Jacobson, Chief Deputy with Millard County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman had minor injuries from the assault and was taken to a safe place as deputies set up a containment. Jacobson said they had been told the man had access to weapons that included some “very serious rifles” so they elected to be cautious.

Millard County called for assistance from Utah County Metro SWAT, which is made up of personnel and vehicles from numerous agencies in Utah County.

Jacobson said after SWAT arrived on scene and went through their protocols, the man came outside and surrendered peacefully to two deputies.

A press release states the suspect, 51-year-old Michael Eric Kalarney, was booked into jail for making a terroristic threat and aggravated assault. The release states the Millard County Attorney will determine if other charges will be filed.

“We are thankful for the safety of the victim, the peaceful ending to this encounter, and for the assistance rendered to us by our fellow law enforcement agencies,” Millard County Sheriff’s Office stated.
