WEST VALLEY CITY - An seventh grade student was hit by a car near Kennedy Junior High School Tuesday morning.

It happened in front of the school located at 4495 south 4800 west.

West Valley City Police said the 13-year-old boy's mother had dropped her son off across the street from the school just after 7:30 a.m.

"He jumped out of the car and ran across the street and the car didn't see him and hit him," Sgt. Jason Johnson with the West Valley Police Department said.

An ambulance rushed the boy to a hospital in serious condition, but police said the boy suffered head trauma and his condition was downgraded to critical.

The Granite School District sent a tweet asking for prayers for the 13-year-old boy and his family.

Johnson said the boy was not in a crosswalk and it does not appear speed was a factor.

The driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with police.

Police released a statement late Tuesday afternoon, saying victim had undergone surgery, and was in stable condition.

A GoFundMe has been set up by the family of the victim, and can be found here.
