KAYSVILLE CITY – Kaysville Power has confirmed that all power has been restored to its city after an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into a power pole early Saturday morning.

Kaysville City officials on Facebook say crews ran into a few small problems overnight but after successfully re-stringing lights across I-15 and to a 7 Eleven power has been restored as of 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The post thanked the workers who have been on the job non-stop since 4 a.m.

According to Kaysville City Police, 26-year-old Jason Exley, who was allegedly driving under the influence, collided with a power pole around 4 a.m. on Saturday and knocked down a main power pole, which also shut down two substations.

“When he ran into the pole, the pole snapped, the pole went down and caused the lines to kind of do an elastic sling shot and wreaked havoc on our electrical system,” said Kaysville Mayor Steve Hiatt. “All of this because of a driver making a bad decision.”

They say Kaysville City power and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) are currently working to get the power on for as many customers as possible but will need to shut down I-15 at some point to restore lines that cross the freeway.

Later Saturday police stated that closure will be at 200 North on I-15 and will be from 10 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday. New power lines will be installed during this time.

Kaysville police say their priority is restoring power to traffic lights but that many residents could be without power until tomorrow.

Exley was treated at a hospital and then booked into jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Police say no other vehicles were involved, though the downed pole did damage a nearby credit union.
