OREM, Utah – An Orem mother and her children are recovering after police say a suspect broke into their home, and assaulted the mother until she was unconscious.

Lt. Craig Martinez with the Orem Police Department said 21-year-old Rodolfo Villalobos Jr. of Provo, broke out a basement window in the home near 600 North and 400 West overnight.  The noise woke up the mother, who the suspect confronted.

"She confronted him and when he started to beat her with this pipe, she fought back. Yeah she did fight back. This poor lady thought she was going to lose her life," Martinez said.

Villalobos allegedly choked the woman until she passed out, then proceeded to beat her with a PVC pipe, police said.

When the woman came to, she ran to a neighbor’s home to call for help.

Police said the three children, ages one, four and seven were not seriously hurt, but the four-year-old daughter was swollen and had some blood on her.

"When the doctors looked at her, she suffered a mild concussion," Martinez said.

Police aren't sure what Villalobos did in the home while the mother was unconscious.

"We know there was a room he went into and kind of rummaged around, but nothing was missing," says Martinez.

Officers found Villalobos a few blocks away and arrested him.

He had blood on his hands and shoes, police said.

Orem Police said it took them a while to confirm Villalobos’ identity because he was not cooperating. Villalobos fought with the officers who arrested him as well as those at the jail.

According to authorities, the woman is expected to recover.

Police arrested Villalobos for Attempted Murder, Aggravated Burglary, Child Abuse, Obstruction, Resisting and Failure to Disclose ID.
