CENTERVILLE, Utah — A man who led Centerville Police officers on a chase in a stolen vehicle has died after an officer-involved shooting on Legacy Pkwy.

According to Centerville Police, the incident began around 2 a.m. Tuesday when West Bountiful Police received a report of a stolen red Honda Civic. Bountiful Police spotted the car around 2:30 and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled and the pursuit was terminated.

Centerville Police say the name of deceased person is Cody Ray McCray, a 32-years-old from West Bountiful.

A Davis County Sheriff's Office deputy also saw the Civic Tuesday morning, but terminated a pursuit once again as the suspect fled.

"As the morning went on, the stolen car was spotted several times, but no effort was made to stop the vehicle because police knew who the suspect was," a news release from Centerville Police said.

Around 9:15, a UHP trooper saw the Civic going north on Legacy Parkway as it approached Parrish Ln. in Centerville. The Civic exited at Parrish Ln., police said, and went east on Parrish Ln., then south on Child Ln. toward West Bountiful. Police received information that the suspect may have been suicidal and intent on "suicide by cop."

At the time, Centerville City's Independence Day Parade was in progress and West Bountiful City's parade was due to start a little more than an hour later.

"The parade route was a major concern for both myself, as the Chief of Centerville, and Chief [Todd] Hixson as the Chief in West Bountiful. We were both very concerned about the safety of the public. So many people gathered, kids everywhere, and this individual running around in that immediate vicinity and indicating he wanted to commit suicide and was obviously not caring about stopping for the police in a stolen car, " Child said.

Around 10:30 a.m., the suspect, who has not yet been identified, turned from Parrish Ln. in Centerville onto northbound Legacy Pkwy. There, troopers used spike strips and performed at least two PIT maneuvers to attempt to stop the Civic.

"The subject was able to continue driving and turned around going southbound in the northbound lanes of Legacy Highway traffic. he subject ran into a marked Centerville patrol car in a head-on trajectory and then another Centerville Officer struck the car causing it to veer into the median where it came to a rest and started a grass fire," the news release said.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers attempted to take the suspect into custody, and one trooper opened fire on the suspect, killing him. Paramedics confirmed the man was dead at the scene.

The trooper who opened fire at the suspect is on paid administrative leave, per the agency's protocol.

The incident is now being investigated by Davis County's Multi-Agency Critical Incident Team, led by Centerville Police. No officers were injured.

Legacy Parkway has now been reopened as of 5 pm.
