PROVO, Utah — A six-year-old girl has died and two other people are critically injured after a car drifted off the road and struck them in Provo Saturday afternoon.

According to Provo Police, the incident happened shortly before 3 p.m. on the 2900 block of West Center St.

Police said a car driven by an 18-year-old man was traveling west on Center St. when it drifted off the road and struck a parked vehicle.

“Three individuals were standing by the parked vehicle when it was struck. The three individuals by the parked vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital, one of which, a 6 year old girl, passed away,” Provo Police wrote in a Facebook post.

Two other two people injured in the incident, a 5-year-old boy and a 64-year-old man, are still hospitalized and in critical condition, police said.

The driver who drifted off the road and struck the victims was drowsy at the wheel, a Provo police representative said Sunday. The lead investigator in the case is expected to speak with the Utah County Attorney on Monday to go over possible charges.

Provo police ask drivers to be attentive and undistracted while behind the wheel.

The family of the victim have identified her as Iris Arnold.

In a statement sent to Fox 13, the family says in part, “The Arnold Family appreciates the support and concern for them and are asking for all to show the same courtesy and love for the young man that caused the accident. While their hearts are broken, they also ache for the young man involved. They miss their sweet Iris and are praying for her grandfather and cousin. She was an intelligent, vibrant and loving little girl.”

A fundraising page has been set up to help the family pay for medical bills and funeral costs.
