MIDVALE - A 17 year-old Midvale teenager remains in critical condition after an 85-year-old female driver hit her in a crosswalk Thursday.

“I saw the silver car plow through like she wasn’t even there,” said Joe Wright, a neighbor who said he was looking out his front window when the accident happened. “She didn’t hit her brakes until after.”

Investigators couldn’t confirm those details, but did say what Wright did next, may have helped save the victim’s life.

“I was probably out the door before the girl even hit the ground,” Wright said.

Wright was joined at the scene by Cody Ebmeyer, who said he was driving behind the car when the accident happened.

“She was in the middle of the road and the car didn’t stop,” Ebmeyer said of the pedestrian.

“My instincts kind of took over,” Ebmeyer said. “I took a couple of EMT classes.”

Both Ebmeyer and Wright say they helped stabilize the teen’s body to prevent further injury and waited for paramedics to arrive. They say she was breathing, but unresponsive.

“The responsibility is on the driver,” said Lt. Bill Robertson with Unified Police Department. “Anytime you have someone in a crosswalk, you have that responsibility.”

Police say the driver did stay at the scene to answer questions, but wouldn’t indicate if she would face any charges.
