MURRAY, Utah — A man is in critical condition after authorities say he got out of a car at a stoplight and started an altercation with an Adult Probation and Parole officer, who ended up shooting the man.

According to a press release from the Utah Department of Corrections, the officer was in Murray City participating in Metro Gang Unit operation near 4500 South and Main Street just before 1 a.m. when a car pulled up beside his at a stoplight.

The passenger in that car got out of the vehicle, approached the officer, and initiated a confrontation that led to the officer shooting the suspect, the press release continued. Authorities did not offer any specific details about the confrontation or the actions of the suspect prior to the shooting beyond saying he was “aggressive.”

The press release said the suspect then got back into the car, and the driver sped off and eventual took the suspect to a hospital.

Officers later apprehended the driver, who was on probation with the Utah Department of Corrections, and took him into custody on a $25,000 warrant. The suspect, who is on parole, remains in the hospital in critical condition.
