WEST VALLEY CITY – One man is dead and two others have been wounded in a shooting at a store parking lot in West Valley City early Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the Shopko parking lot at 4850 West 3500 South shortly after 4 a.m.

When officers arrived they found three adult male gunshot victims, according to a press release from West Valley City Police.

One victim, identified as 34 year old Adam Hart from West Valley City,  was pronounced dead at the scene. One man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. A third man who was shot suffered minor injuries.

Police believe some of the people involved in the incident were attending a party nearby.

“These people, along with others, met in the parking lot of the Shopko store and an altercation ensued,” West Valley City Police said in a statement. “During this altercation, shots were fired and three people were hit.”

A group of ten to fifteen people ran away from the scene of the shooting when officers arrived. Police have detained several of those individuals for questioning, but believe a vehicle with other witnesses may have left the scene before officers arrived.

Police say that early information indicates that gang involvement may have played a role in the shooting.
