DRAPER, Utah — Three maximum security inmates were hospitalized after suffering stab wounds at the Utah State Prison Tuesday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Utah Department of Corrections, the incident occurred around 2 p.m. at the prison’s Uinta facility. Four inmates were involved in the fight, the news release said, and three of them required treatment at local hospitals.

Department of Corrections officials described the weapon used in the incident as “homemade.”

Medical staff at the prison determined the stabbing injuries required treatment off site, and two of the injured inmates were transported by ambulance. The third was transported by helicopter. Two of the injured prisoners returned to the prison Tuesday night after being treated for their injuries. The third is still hospitalized.

The prison was placed on lockdown, meaning inmates were confined to their units and movement was tightly controlled, while Unified Police Department officials conducted an investigation. Department of Corrections officials said most of the prison’s facilities will be returning to normal operations Wednesday.

The Oquirrh facility will be on limited movement. Visiting at Oquirrh is open today and is not impacted by the restricted operational status.

The Uinta facility is also on limited movement while the investigation is completed.
