WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Three people are in custody after a road rage incident turned into a police chase Saturday night, and the victims tell police the suspect fired a shot at their vehicle after being told there were children in the car.
According to a statement of probable cause, things began around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of 4100 South and Bangerter Highway as a car came up behind a couple and began honking their horn and riding the other vehicle’s bumper.
When the car pulled up alongside the victims, a woman in the passenger seat rolled down a window and told the suspects there were children in the car. The suspect reportedly pulled out a rifle and said “I don’t care.”
The suspect vehicle then allegedly dropped behind, and the suspects fired a shot at the victim’s vehicle. No one was injured.
A short time later, police spotted the suspect’s car and tried to pull the vehicle over, but the suspects fled from police. After a short chase, police performed a Pursuit Immobilization Technique, or PIT maneuver, stopping the vehicle in an intersection and preventing any pedestrians from being hurt.
The suspects fled on foot but were apprehended a short time later.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Melquiadez Ramirez. A passenger was identified as Sergio Pena Rodriguez. Both men face three counts of attempted homicide, among other charges.
The third suspect is a juvenile and has not been identified.
