Sgt. Brandon Shearer with the Salt Lake City Police Department said that around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a shots fired call at a residence near 1329 North Redwood Road.

Sgt. Shearer said that 34 year-old Leroy Daniel Valdez was locked outside of his apartment and believed that there were people inside who he did not want there. Valdez broke into his apartment, and upon entering he was confronted by 33 year-old Kenonren Goodman.

Valdez and Goodman engaged in some sort of struggle inside the apartment, and during the struggle Valdez shot Goodman in the head, police said.

In the probable cause statement from SLCPD, Valdez told police he was "immediately assaulted from his left side" by a man "larger than him." He said it was while he was "pushing the man away with both hands," that  a handgun in Valdez's right hand discharged and struck and killed the victim.

Valdez ran away from the apartment but later turned himself in to police. Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are unsure of the relation between Valdez and Goodman, or if Goodman was a resident of the apartment.

Leroy Daniel Valdez has been booked into to the Salt Lake County Jail and faces charges of homicide and possession of methamphetamine.
