WASHINGTON - A member of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder D. Todd Christofferson, gave the opening prayer in the U.S. Senate this morning.

Senator Orrin Hatch, the President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate, introduced him, and is the first LDS Apostle to open the Senate floor.

Sen. Hatch said in a statement he is also hosting Elder Christofferson at a special event honoring the Book of Mormon at the Library of Congress.

According to Hatch's office, the event is a recognition of the inclusion of the Book of Mormon in the “America Reads” exhibit at the Library.

There Elder Christofferson is speaking on the importance of the Book of Mormon in the lives of millions of Americans.

Elder Christofferson's prayer:

"Our Father, who art in Heaven, we bow before thee this day, the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and remember with soberness and and humility the sacrifice of so many, who have offered their lives to preserve our liberty.  We pray that thou will bless their descendants and sustain the vital institutionals of our government that this precious liberty may be preserved through the generations to come."
