SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — A woman is in critical condition Friday after she was shot in the torso, but police say the wound does not appear to be life-threatening.

According to the South Salt Lake Police Department, officers responded to the area of 480 East Stanley Ave. (near 3182 South) on a report of a shooting around 4 p.m.

Responding officers were not able to locate a victim when they arrived, but a short time later they were notified of a woman with a gunshot wound who had just arrived at a local hospital. Police then went to the hospital to interview the 21-year-old female.

While the woman is in critical condition, her wound is not believed to be life-threatening.

Police have a male suspect in custody, and they say the investigation is ongoing.

Gary Keller, a public information officer with South Salt Lake PD, said the suspect in custody had come to the hospital with the victim. It was not immediately clear what relationship, if any, exists between the suspect and victim.

Keller said at this point they aren’t sure what happened between the two prior to the shot being fired.
