KANAB, Utah – The mayor of Hurricane, John Wayne Bramall, 59, faces criminal charges in an alleged poaching incident on property he owns in southern Utah, according to court documents.

Bramall was charged Thursday in Kane County’s 6th District Court with two counts of aiding and assisting the wanton destruction of protected wildlife.

The case stems from an incident on Bramall’s Kane County property where he raises elk in an area inside a high fence.

Hunting elk is allowed on the property, but not other animals, including mule deer.

The charges state that on Oct. 22, Bramall allowed two men to kill two mule deer, one described as a “trophy animal.”

If convicted, the mayor faces up to five years in prison for the felony charge and another year in jail on the misdemeanor count.
