Civil rights advocate, John Florez, dies

SALT LAKE CITY- Utah civil rights advocate, John Florez, died Thursday at the age of 84.

Florez helped found several civil rights organizations in Utah including the Utah Migrant Council and the Central City Community Center.

Florez was Director of Equal Opportunity at the University of Utah, taught at the College of Social Work, and served on the Salt Lake City School Board, according to his obituary.

He held several White House and Presidential appointments and worked on the staff of Utah Senator, Orrin Hatch.

Florez is survived by his wife, Diane, four children, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Emigration Stake Center in Salt Lake’s avenues.
