MENDON CITY, Utah – A 64 year old man accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while cleaning his Glock .45 caliber handgun, according to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to a home in Mendon City Friday on a report of an accidental shooting.

When they arrived, they found Michael Lee Lockhart, with a gunshot wound to his stomach.

Lockhart told investigators he had cleaned his gun and reassembled it, and loaded it with a full magazine of ammunition.

He told deputies he wasn’t sure how he fired the single round that struck him.

Lockhart was able to call 911, and was conscious and talking to emergency responders when he was transported to a local hospital.

Investigators won’t file any charges in the shooting, calling it an “unfortunate accident.”
