WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- All directions of travel are closed at the intersection of 4700 South and 5600 West Saturday night as crews respond to a three-vehicle crash, and a woman suffered fatal injuries while her husband was critically injured.

West Valley City PD tweeted about the road closure just after 6 p.m., stating earlier that there was a 3-car crash in the area.

Around 6:30 p.m. police confirmed that a husband and wife were among those involved in the crash, and the woman was taken to a hospital by ground and then flown to another hospital but ultimately passed away.

The deceased was later identified as 55-year-old Maria C. Alvarez of West Valley City. Her husband remains in critical but stable condition Saturday night, according to a press release from West Valley City Pd.

Police at the scene said the married couple were in a car that turned left in front of an SUV.

"Sounds like the light was just turning yellow and the SUV was trying to make that yellow light," said West Valley Police Lieutenant Robert Hamilton. "That SUV was not able to avoid the accident and it ended up slamming directly into the side, and T-boning that car."

Those two vehicles then crashed into a third vehicle that was stopped at a red light nearby,

Hamilton said the couple was extricated by the fire department from their vehicle.

A pregnant woman riding in another vehicle suffered minor injuries, and Lt. Hamilton said no one else involved in the crash was seriously hurt.

At this point, he said it appears the original car with the couple is at fault for the crash.

West Valley City Fire Department said traffic is being diverted at 6000 West, 4800 West, 4900 South and 4400 South.
