SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah -- Bob Fillmore and Elmer Lovato dealt with the trauma and pain of war in Vietnam with little thanks, so the honk of truck horns as they stand at attention over Interstate 215 is a comforting song.

"We didn’t get a welcome home," Fillmore said. "This is our welcome home."

The two men started their vigil on either side of the 22nd North overpass at 5:30 a.m. this Veterans Day.

Later in the morning, a young man walked up in his dress blues. It was Private First Class Chase Davis, a 22-year-old in the Army Reserve.

"He’s a veteran and I’m a new soldier, and in all honesty the military’s a family," Davis said.

Fillmore said he was glad to see Davis participating.

"That’s a sign of today’s military right there, an excellent young man," he said.
