Although winter isn’t quite here yet, now is the time to begin preparing your body for your favorite winter sports. It can be difficult to jump right back into cold-weather activities, and injuries such as sprains, strains, dislocations, and fractures are common during the winter. Injury prevention includes proper training and a few safety measures to keep in mind.

Common Winter Sports Injuries

  • Concussion
  • Strained muscles
  • Ligament tears
  • Dislocations
  • Bone fractures

Injury Prevention Tips for Winter Sports Season

  • Condition muscles before starting winter activities
  • Properly warm up and stretching
  • Agility and speed training
  • Core strengthening
  • Wear the appropriate protective gear
  • Check that all equipment is working properly
  • Pay attention to what your body is telling you
  • Don’t go out alone
  • Know your limits

If you suspect an injury, it is important to stop the activity immediately. In the case of minor injuries, R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) can be an effective at-home treatment plan. However, if symptoms persist or are severe, you should receive a medical evaluation.
