WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Officers in the West Valley City Police Department will wear a shroud over their badges and non-sworn personnel will wear a memorial pin to honor the memory of an officer killed in the line of duty Sunday.

Officer Cody Brotherson, 25, was hit and killed while involved in the pursuit of three suspects who allegedly stole a vehicle.

Later Sunday, the department stated their officers will shroud their badges in Brotherson’s honor, and non-sworn personnel will wear a pin featuring a black ribbon and badge design. The pin is pictured below.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert issued a statement mourning Brotherson’s death and stated that he will order the Flag of the United States and the Flag of the State of Utah to be lowered on the day of Brotherson’s funeral. His full statement is below:

“It is with heavy hearts that Jeanette and I join all Utahns in mourning the passing of Officer Cody Brotherson, who gave the ultimate sacrifice this morning. We are heartbroken to lose such a young and dedicated officer who by all accounts had a bright future ahead of him.

“Once again we face a tragic reminder of the selflessness and unwavering courage that is required of our peace officers and their families each day. We cannot thank enough those who put their lives on the line to serve, defend and protect our communities. Officer Brotherson’s sacrifice will not be forgotten. We offer our prayers and sincere condolences to his family, fiancée, friends, and the entire law enforcement community at this difficult time.”

Senator Orrin Hatch stated Twitter that, “Utah lost a hero today. Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Brothersons family, friends, and the [West Valley City Police Department].”

Emergency response agencies around Utah also expressed their condolences and support on social media. See the embedded tweets below for a sampling of those messages.
