WEST VALLEY CITY -- A family torn up by a loss too tough to put into words cried as they spoke about Officer Cody Brotherson, who was killed in the line of duty on Sunday.

"He was the best person any family could ever ask for," Jenny Brotherson said, about her first born son. "Cody had the most loyal heart, and would do anything for those he loved."

She said Brotherson was the family jokester and protector.

The 25-year old had a full life ahead of him, and his mother said the officer was living his dream.

Jenny Brotherson said her son, "wanted to be a police officer his entire life."

She asked people who encounter police officers to "give them the support and the respect that they deserve."

Officer Brotherson started work at West Valley City three years ago, Chief Lee Russo said. He said Brotherson was one of his first hires.

"This was a young man born and raised in West Valley, that chose to serve his home community," Chief Russo said.

He said Brotherson was a "true, hometown hero."

In a Facebook post Sunday, West Valley City Police said Brotherson was "a fine officer who showed passion and integrity in his work." The post also said Brotherson was "well liked and respected by all who knew him."

But his life, and his dream, were cut short.

His family and fiancee, got no chance to say goodbye. Now, they only have memories to share, as they honor the man they knew and loved so much.

"Cody was the most generous, helpful and understanding human being," Jenny Brotherson said, in tears. "We are so proud of what he did with his life."

The fallen officer's mother said they are still planning funeral arrangements, and those will be announced to the public once they are made.

Cody Brotherson washit and killed by a vehicle while involved in a pursuit with three suspects who allegedly stole a car Sunday morning. Emergency response agencies from around Utah have expressed their support, and Gov. Gary Herbert says flags in Utah will be lowered on the day of the funeral.
