SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Bangerter Highway will close in both directions from 4700 South to 5400 South Friday night through Monday morning, and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and seek alternate routes.

Utah Department of Transportation crews will be working to relocate a 66-inch water main that is part of the Jordan Valley Aqueduct, which services nearly 600,000 people in Salt Lake County.

The closure will begin Friday, October 28, at 9 p.m. and crews hope to have the road reopened in time for the Monday commute at 5 a.m. Heavy delays in the area are expected during the weekend.

The project is being done on a weekend,  "To avoid the peak times. We realize it's a busy freeway type facility for the valley, we picked the best time that we could do it," Bryan Chamberlain, a UDOT Project Manager, said. "We've got the big pipeline that we're installing across Bangerter Highway, so we'll have both directions shut down all weekend."

Southbound drivers will detour west on 3500 South to 5600 West. Northbound drivers will detour east on 5400 South to Redwood Road. Through traffic going east and west on 5400 South and 4700 South will flow as normal.

Shifting the aqueduct allows preparations to begin on a freeway style interchange at 5400 South and Bangerter Highway. That project is one of four new interchange projects.
